Cheap Cordless Drills
Posted on: August 20, 2011
The cordless drill market is vibrant. There are over 10 manufacturers that have decent brand awareness. And there is a varied array of drills available. An 18v cordless drill may cost $40 or it may cost $500. Obviously there's going to be a significant difference in quality between those two drills.
But many people own or want to own cordless drills for "around the house" tasks and will never ask very much from their drills. They want to hang a picture, mount a TV, install a shelf, assemble some furntiture, etc. A $500 drill would be overkill for these tasks.
But people are understandably leary of all cheap tools and this includes cordless drills. A cordless drill is a longterm purchase. Many people will keep theirs for 10 years or longer. So they don't want to buy the cheapest they can find becuase they want one that will last.
The problem is that if you do any research on cordless drills, you will mostly find information on the high end of the spectrum. Should you buy a Makita or Milwaukee? What is Festool? Most or all of these will be too expensive for your purposes.
It can be hard to find information on cheap cordless drills. But there is some brand awareness in that area. Black and Decker is known for making "affordable" tools. If you go to Walmart you'll mostly find Black and Decker equipment. And B and D is not a bad choice for a cheap, but decent quality cordless drill.
But there are other options. I've found Bosch drills almost as cheap as Black and Decker. Also you can find bargains if you're willing to look. I would say your best bet is to look for a mid-range drill and try to find it at a better price. This way you get a cordless drill that will give you performance and last for quite a while, but you won't have to pay too much for a tool that you won't use often.
